Understanding Poker

Poker encompasses a number of card games that all have the same betting rules in which the payout is determined by hand ranking. This is not the case in all poker games, but the majority of poker games are built upon hand ranking. Variations in poker games can be how the cards are dealt, how hands may be formed by the player, whether high or low hands win the bet, whether there is a limit on bet size and how many rounds of betting there will be per hand. The majority of poker games begin with some form of forced bet, or ante, by one of the players. The theory behind betting is that the player betting the most is signifying that they have the highest ranked hand. Although this might not always be the case, in the case of a bluff, this is what the game of poker is centered around. The action moves around the table in a clockwise fashion and if a player feels as if their hand is not suitable to pay the bet, they are allowed to fold and any money they had in the pot is left in the pot for the winner of the hand. Someone who believes their hand is good enough to win the pot and wishes to remain in the game must “call” the raise or they are allowed to “raise” the bet themselves. The round of betting ends when all players at the table have either called the bet or folded. If all players except one have folded, that player is awarded the pot of money, generally in the middle of the table. If there are multiple players still in the game, those players reveal their cards and the player with the highest hand wins the pot. Poker has gained in popularity significantly, especially in the past decade. With the inclusion of the Poker World Series on sports channel ESPN as well as many other tournaments being broadcast on television, poker has become a household game for many.
